Immigration narrative is always a topic I am working on and interested in. When I found out about the distance sensor, I immidiately knew I wanted to work on something about distance and the spatial relationship of home.
In the initial idea, I was going to use two distance sensors representing the duality of the immigration life. (plus, I really wanted to run between sensors in a park when doing documentation…)
The initial concept was scoped down to using one sensor to tell the same immigration story. I was stucked with the presentation for a while, thinking about the relationship between home and individual.
The idea came when I got a rice cracker from a classmate. The rounded rectangular shaped snack gave me the idea of moving two surfaces close and apart, which then became the idea of making an accordion zine with covers look like houses.
The prototype for testing was made with recycled materials from classmates’ project. The cardboards were from Yuhan, and rubber band was from Angelic.
An unexpected chanllenge turned out to be making a wood box. After a lots of trial and error (and the very first attempt of using a coping saw, very satisfying), I got a box to hold breadboard and power bank (and somehow also dyed my fingers yellow…?).
